Sunday night, the sound of heavy equipment and emergency lights flooded the neighborhood. Emergency vehicles raced to a home close to ours. A fire had broken out in the laundry room dryer vent. By the time I reached the area with my camera, the flames were under control. Fortunately nobody was hurt and the fire was brought under control before it could spread to adjacent homes.
It was an experience the neighborhood will not soon forget. Five separate fire companies from the West Chester Fire Department and other units responded to the emergency for which the residents of all the homes in this area expressed gratitude. It is always amazing that most fire companies are staffed by volunteers. Companies pay for their equipment and expenses with local funding and fund raising. Again, we are grateful for their immediate response. Prior to the fire each firefighter was busy with their own family, friends, event, or maybe watching the final episode of “Lost”. Upon receiving the alarm, each suddenly left whatever they were doing to help someone they’d never met before. It is remarkable.
